Group psychotherapy may be helpful. Group therapy is cost-effective and produces measurable results. Many of the problems adolescents experience are related to difficulties in relationships, or interact with relationships in some way. Problems often occur with friends, boyfriends or girlfriends, teachers, parents or other family members, or other authority figures.
Group psychotherapy gives teenagers the opportunity to learn new problem solving skills, learn about their relationships with others, and get support and feedback from the group. Group psychotherapy is active and goal directed. Each adolescent sets goals before joining a group, and these goals are reviewed and revised on an ongoing basis by the therapist, group members, and parents if appropriate. Adolescents generally enjoy being part of a therapy group, and often participate with more willingness and enthusiasm than other treatment modalities. An initial assessment can determine an adolescent's appropriateness for group psychotherapy. Treatment in a group need not interfere with existing therapy. We work cooperatively with other therapists and psychopharmacologists.
